Bill Moyers!

I've never pointed this meager blog towards politics, but I wanted to share this most brilliant of thoughts from Bill Moyers:

I think this country is in a very precarious state at the moment. I think, as I say, the escalating, accumulating power of organized wealth is snuffing out everything public, whether it’s public broadcasting, public schools, public unions, public parks, public highways. Everything public has been under assault since the late 1970s, the early years of the Reagan administration, because there is a philosophy that’s been extant in America for a long time that anything public is less desirable than private.

And I think we’re at a very critical moment in the equilibrium. No society, no human being, can survive without balance, without equilibrium. Nothing in excess, the ancient Greeks said. And Madison, one of the great founders, one of the great framers of our Constitution, built equilibrium into our system. We don’t have equilibrium now. The power of money trumps the power of democracy today, and I’m very worried about it. I said to—and if we don’t address this, if we don’t get a handle on what we were talking about—money in politics—and find a way to thwart it, tame it, we’re in —democracy should be a break on unbridled greed and power, because capitalism, capital, like a fire, can turn from a servant, a good servant, into an evil master. And democracy is the brake on my passions and my appetites and your greed and your wealth. And we have to get that equilibrium back.

Groupon!

Yes, this is the day our Groupon feature gets unleashed. It's a great deal if you're at the right place at the right time! You can find the deal here. We'll start taking the Groupons starting Tuesday morning, and any day thereafter until they expire at the end of the year. Hopefully we'll succeed in our twin goals of rewarding some of our regular customers with a deal, and gaining some new folks into the Coffeetopia family. We are humbled whenever anyone chooses to visit us! Thanks!

"mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys"

(Thanks to Kelly for the photo, & to Don for taking it!)

you got it. Last week's theme was country! How they come up with themes? That's up to these wranglers discretion and your guessing.

Don't worry--there was no vacation taken for these young baristas into the deep country, neither was there an equestrian trail for customers like us to follow them! Instead they kept their ruggedness and barista skills at one of our three frontiers, Mission Street.

And soon Coffeetopia will be joining the facebook caravan and you will be able to keep up with their themes! Even joining them for thursday theme deals. Watch out now, their guns are smokin' hot and that cowboy coffee will be a brewin' So leave the bowlegs at home & we'll see you at high noon!

pace...pace....pace....now draw!

Also, Pete Cochrane's AWESOME art is ready to be shared, so come on through.

got thyme? no,no- got to have theme.

[you guessed it--pink day]

it seems as if the change in weather is bringing out a little sunshine in all of us lately. check out the workers @mission!
who knew puttin' in a little theme on certain workdays would look & be so charming.

Special Thanks to Kelly for the photos. :)

Simply the best.

Coffeetopia would like to express it's gratitude to our caffeinated compadres for their support. We have been featured in the Santa Cruz Weekly as the best coffeehouse in Santa Cruz. Without your addiction our goal of the gold would not be possible. Whoever said Disneyland was the best place on earth obviously forgot the free admission into our high-strung roller coaster of grind & beans.

On a side note, Coffeetopia on mission st. is sharing a Nick Anderson art show with the community. So come swing on by & treat yourself to a delicious drip! Don't forget to scope out our cheese plates and loose-leaf teas!

a year of relief & refills!

[insert static sound]

After riding in turbulence and heading towards a country where my poppa and his addictive crew would run near-boiling water through burned rice to mimic the taste of coffee. I've decided that getting my socks knocked off my feet in a tin can with wings 30,000 feet in the air...that I should really get into the whole 2010 resolution dishing.

So may I repeat, very loud, through my screen to yours HAPPY NEW YEARS!!! (insert fireworks)

On a serious note, What's not exciting about flipping over that same old leaf that we can't seem to budge, and what's not exciting about trying for the umpteenth time to keep a resolution? Ha, resolutions.

According to Wiki:

A New Years Resolution (N.) A New Year's resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous. The name comes from the fact that these commitments normally go into effect on New Year's Day.

...Why don't we change that Wiki-def. up and create a group of individuals that are reforming a habit, for sure, how about we stamp this as Coffeetopia Resolutions of Resolute Resolvers. You can lay off the fingernail biting, foot tapping anxiety and join the cause!

And since it's a new decade. 20[10] why don't we polish a list of TEN resolutions:

1. Drink more coffee, drive responsibly.

2. Try our recently added lox bagel w/ a cup of your joe, if not a special espresso drink.
Oh! & don't forget the red onions (..w/ the bagel)

3. Still feening for the energy? Really craving a low-calorie latte? Why not try a short version of your latte drink with NF milk? (Sorry our soy technology is not up to speed quite, yet)

Short basically exudes the tipping of your toes in the antartic ocean during winter; hey, why not?

4. DEFINITELY try a brew bar within these 365 days! The taste, the aroma, the fabric of our experiences...oh your first brew bar, may be a re-tendered love of a brew bar will be a razzle-dazzle type of an experience! I guarantee it.

5. Have a smoothie. They are all non-dairy, and all natural. I would highly recommend an Acai Smoothie since it's loaded with antioxidants. Mmm, delicious. We can also make substitutions on the fruits & liquid, no problem.

6. Just not into carbs this year? We understand, especially since those egg bagels smell so delicious. For $2.75 why not try a bageless bagel?

7. The gift of giving. Is it already that person's birthday? anniversary? celebration again? Need a quick "thoughtful" idea! I'm putting dibs on our gift cards :). They're great for all occasions and non-occasions. And we treat them like cash! Ah, to give more...:)

8. Stay and think local. We really appreciate the importance of supporting local shops. From our coffee to our bagels, right down to our pastries: Locality is key to a happy happy town.

9. Try @ least one of our special types of bagel spreads. We have your hummus, smoked tofu, plain 'ol butta, to your plain cream cheese, to your Jalapeno, Garlic Herb, and Sundried Tomatoe cream cheeses! Blended daily.

AND--for--- THE----- FINAL-e
10. Become a regular! If that means creating your own latte, making a coffee you like iced or hot, we have the resources to give you your perfect drink. Deal? Great. See you soon!

See, not all New Years Resolutions are that tedious, right? Who's with me on this one? 2010, Wheeeeeee!!!

Breve, Breve.

Mazzer Robur!

I never thought I would be singing the praises of a grinder but as of yesterday at the Portola Dr. cafe that has all changed! Sure it's big. Yeah, a little pricey. Beautiful? Yes! But the flavor and crema difference in the cup is what counts, and we're very impressed.

That's a Mazzer Super Jolly in the background--a workhorse in the industry--but my goodness it looks like a home grinder compared to the Robur! We're still learning it's tricks--it's fast!

We'll be bringing Roburs to the other two Coffeetopias in the coming weeks. We're looking forward to adding this tool to our mix in the persuit of excellent espresso. It'll be interesting to see the results at Mission through the Synesso and Cap Rd. through the LaMarzocco. Anyway, it IS just a grinder, and I don't want to sound any more like Mazzer ad copy than I already do, but together with some soon-to-be announced espresso changes we're feeling very good heading into Summer!

Double shot anyone? Salud!
